Trans & Nonbinary Therapy in Tacoma and Across Washington

You deserve a therapist who already understands, so your sessions can be about your life and not a lesson in gender. At Grit City Counseling, trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, two-spirit and questioning clients are at the heart of our practice. Gender is not a problem to be fixed here. It’s one part of a whole, wonderful person.

What brings people to us

Some people come to us because of gender. Many come for everything else: anxiety, depression, burnout, grief, relationships, trauma, or simply the exhaustion of moving through a world that isn’t always kind. We can help with all of it, and you never have to justify your identity to get care.

We often work with people who are:

  • Exploring or questioning their gender, at whatever pace feels right

  • Coming out to family, partners, coworkers or friends

  • Navigating social, medical or legal transition, or choosing not to

  • Coping with dysphoria, minority stress, or the weight of current events

  • Healing from rejection, religious harm, or past therapy that didn’t affirm them

  • Building chosen family, community and joy

Gender-affirming care, including letters

If you’re pursuing hormones or surgery, every one of our therapists can talk through your goals with you and write a letter of support for your medical team. We follow current WPATH Standards of Care and treat letters as a collaboration, not gatekeeping.

Trans and nonbinary youth and their families

We see kids 6 and up and teens, and we welcome the parents and caregivers who love them. Under Washington law, teens 13 and older can consent to their own outpatient mental health care. Parents can also get their own support through our support for parents of queer and trans kids.

Care that fits the whole you

Many of our trans clients are also neurodivergent, trauma survivors, or both. Our team brings training in EMDR, art therapy and neurodivergent-affirming approaches, so you don’t have to split yourself between different specialists. We also offer a weekly Trans & Nonbinary Support Group.
